For starters, Jeremy Bamber had sexual relationships with both men and women in his youth, which they disapproved of. Then, he left high school with no qualifications and shipped off to Australia in order to find himself in 1978. Born Jeremy Paul Marsham in London, Jeremy Bamber was the product of an affair between Juliet Dorothy Wheeler, a vicar’s daughter, and a British Army sergeant major named Leslie Brian Marsham. The pair gave their child up for adoption when he was still a baby, and the Bambers adopted him by the time he was six months old.

Jeremy and Julie, their relationship, I think that there’s a lot to do with him being, again, the son of a squire, and the rather more polished young gent who’s gone to a public school and who is dating a woman who’s probably from a humbler background. So, I think that even the way that feeds into some of the key relationships in the story, struck me as being inflected in a very English way. The line had gone dead, he told officers, after the sound of a shot. His current lawyers had asked for ITV to postpone showing White House Farm until the latest court hearing, a judicial review bid against the Director of Public Prosecutions, had been heard. He told them that after the sound of a shot the line had gone dead.

It must’ve been very exciting for someone who probably had lived a pretty staid and boring life. And he comes along and he’s drawing her into this almost Bonnie and Clyde exciting world. And then all of a sudden, oh no, it’s gone way, way too far. But maybe she feels that she’s in too deep to get out now.

Series creator Kris Mrksa wrote the screenplay with Giula Sandler, predominantly using the 2015 book ‘The Murders at White House Farm’ by Carol Ann Lee as their main source of inspiration. Bamber was convicted and sentenced to life in prison more than 35 years ago for the White House Farm murders in Essex, in which he killed his entire family. That led us to talking to a wider range of people, most importantly, Mike Ainsley and Ron Cook. We were able to meet with him and we were able to meet with Ron Cook, who was the head scene of crime guy who was there right from the start. We drove down to Essex and sat in this old pub and met with him. And you know, in TV shows, the retired detective will pull out these folders full of evidence, and I always watch that and I think, “That’s bullshit.

His family members had also expressed concern by his behaviour in the days following his family's murder. While he was distraught at the funeral, he was seen laughing during the wake. He also travelled to Amsterdam and St Tropez after the funerals, sold his parents' cars and attempted to sell nude photos of his sister to The Sun. Bamber has always protested his innocence, insisting it was his schizophrenic sister, Sheila, who shot and murdered the family before turning the gun on herself.

Bamber Limited was valued at £400,000 in 1985 (£1,220,000 in 2020). Besides the farmhouse and 300-acre farmland, June and Nevill owned property in London as well as a caravan site. Jeremy’s motive, argue the prosecution and his detractors, was this wealth as he did not want to share his inheritance. Conversely, similar arguments can be made against his cousins, including Boutflour, who inherited the Bamber estate after Jeremy’s conviction. Some people will point to that stuff and say, “Oh, well that just suggests that he’s not really guilty,” but I don’t agree.

But it was only a month later when Mugford – the now ex-girlfriend who had accompanied Bamber to the funeral – got in touch with police that the case against him really started to build. Jeremy Bamber was convicted of one of the most heinous mass murders sprees in modern British history. In August 1985, he brutally killed his parents, Nevill and June Bamber, and his sister and twin nephews at their White House Farm estate in Essex, England. So why and how did Jeremy become implicated in the murders?

Revolves around the true story of a fateful night in August 1985 when five members of the same family are murdered at an Essex farmhouse, and the ensuing police investigation and court case ... Before the murders, Jeremy Bamber had been working at the family farm and living in Goldhanger in a cottage owned by his father. Bamber had called the Essex police saying that his father contacted him. According to Bamber, his father phoned him, saying, "Your sister's gone crazy and she's got a gun." Bamber said that after the sound of a shot, the line went dead. However, there were distinct oddities about the case, including that Sheila wouldn't have been able to reach the trigger with the gun should the silencer have been attached in order to shoot herself. The silencer was also found flecked with blood in the cupboard, meaning that she would have had to have used it on her family before placing it back into the cupboard to kill herself, an unlikely scenario.

I think what it shows is someone who’s impulsive in a way that’s not always cleverly thought out. He is prone to acts of, as I say, rather wanton cruelty. I think it also suggests a sort of a splintering, if you like, in the guy.
